Welcome to Philip Singleton’s homepage, providing information about his compositions, performances and theoretical writings.
Philip is a doctoral researcher at the University of Surrey, undertaking practice-led research in contemporary composition. His music is especially influenced by the French ‘Spectral’ school of composers of the 1970s and 1980s, along with the discoveries of the previous generation of modernists – most notably Pierre Boulez. Recent works have included his Chamber Symphony for 17 players, an award-winning String Quartet Movement for the Ligeti Quartet and his Carillons et Mélodies which was performed to great acclaim at the Farnham Festival of New Music and in Winchester Cathedral.
Composers featuring strongly in his musicological work include Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail, alongside the younger generation, represented chiefly by Marc-André Dalbavie, Thierry Escaich and Bruno Mantovani.
Philip is also in demand as a trumpet player, and he performs frequent recitals featuring new music alongside works from the 18th – 20th centuries. Past performances have included the UK premiere of Elliott Carter’s Retracing III for solo trumpet in 2011, the world premiere of Pande Shahov’s Heraclea in 2013, Hindemith’s Trumpet Sonata and Bach’s Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen at the Guildford International Music Festival, and many recitals and concerto appearances at venues around the UK.
Additionally, Philip maintains a busy teaching schedule, and alongside his work at several renowned schools and colleges, he has lectured on Messiaen and the Spectralists as part of the University of Surrey’s MMus composition programme, as well as assisting with the assessment of BMus and MMus student compositions.
